UNHCR is calling on local and central authorities in Kyrgyzstan to improve the situation and the return conditions for some 75,000 remaining internally displaced people (IDPs) who were uprooted by the violence in southern Kyrgyzstan during June.

The UNHCR regional office in Stockholm has received several donations throughout the years from the Finnish Refugee Council (FRC). Between 2007 and 2009, FRC raised 6454 EUR for UNHCR.

2010 Nansen Award
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) today announced the winner of its annual Nansen Refugee Award, British photo-journalist Alixandra Fazzina. Ms. Fazzina was chosen for her tireless dedication to uncovering and portraying the overlooked human consequences of war.

In an election year most of the focus is on domestic policies. But as in other areas, asylum and refugee policies are influenced by developments outside. With its Almedalen seminar on 5 July, UNHCR aimed to widen the perspective. There is much attention given to the EU-orchestrated harmonization. An increasingly apparent trend, however, is the political and practical cooperation among the Nordic countries.

UNHCR has called for a significant increase in resettlement opportunities, estimating that over the next three to five years more than 805,000 refugees will need resettling in third countries.
This year's consultations, which are taking place in Geneva from July 6th to 8th, are co-chaired by Sweden and UNHCR. Dan Eliasson, Director-General of the Swedish Migration Board, and High Commissioner Guterres will open the meeting.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has heard from the Police Chief in Orestiada in northern Greece that sixteen people drowned while trying to cross the Evros River on 29 June. Eleven of the bodies were recovered on the Greek side of the river, while a further five were found on the Turkish side. The majority are believed to be Somalis, including three women.

The highly relevant discussion will provide new views on how decisions on refugee policies are made in the Nordic countries. The study "Voices of Afghan Children - study on asylum-seeking children in Sweden " examines the reasons for leaving Afghanistan, the routes the children take, and their reception on arrival. The children describe the journey to Sweden via Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, Greece, France and other European countries. They tell stories of how they are mistreated by smugglers, migrants, border guards and police on the way. Some die on the way or are left behind.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres, announced today a major landmark in resettlement of Iraqi refugees, with 100,000 people having been referred for resettlement from the Middle East to third countries since 2007. Guterres made the announcement during his visit to Syria, which according to government estimates, hosts over 1 million refugees, the majority from Iraq.

Some 300,000 people are now estimated to be internally displaced in Kyrgyzstan, according to information from the Kyrgyz Interim Government and non-governmental organizations on the ground. While many among this population are being sheltered by family and host communities, it is also estimated that at least 40,000 people are in need of shelter. The Kyrgyz authorities are trying to restore law and order, and have reported that some 180 people have been killed and a further 1,900 injured.

A UNHCR emergency airlift to Uzbekistan carrying humanitarian aid for tens of thousands of people fleeing the violence southern Kyrgyzstan began early Wednesday morning (16 June). The first two UNHCR flights, loaded with humanitarian aid from agency's central stockpiles in Dubai, landed at Andijan airport at 1110 and 1400 today local time.

STOCKHOLM - The first of six planned Ilyushin-76 cargo planes, each carrying 40 tonnes of UNHCR relief supplies for refugees fleeing violence in southern Kyrgystan, is scheduled to take off from Dubai tomorrow morning (Wednesday, 16 June) at 0100 hrs GMT and is expected to land at Andijan airport in Uzbekistan at 0500 hrs GMT.

2009 Global Trends Report
Some 43.3 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide at the end of 2009, the highest number of people uprooted by conflict and persecution since the mid-1990s, according to UNHCR's annual 2009 Global Trends report, released today. At the same time, the number of refugees voluntarily returning to their home countries has fallen to its lowest level in twenty years.

Growing numbers of Afghan children are making a difficult and dangerous overland
journey to Europe, travelling without their parents and exposed to dangers and
human rights abuses, a new United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR) report has found. The report presents recommendations on how
governments, including the government of Afghanistan, should respond to this
complex issue.

UNHCR, Lithuanian Red Cross and the State Border Guard Service in Lithuania have taken an important step towards ensuring protection-sensitive border monitoring in Lithuania. The three parties reached an agreement in early June 2010. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed in Vilnius, Lithuania, by representatives of all parties.

UNHCR understands that four governments - the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK - are arranging an enforced removal of Iraqi citizens to Baghdad, Iraq later this week. We have not received confirmed information of the number and profile of those individuals and whether some have requested protection.
